RHEUMATOLOGY:

Rheumatology is a branch of Medicine dealing with problems of the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, bones, tendons, cartilage, etc.) and immune system related problems. It's a diverse and an advanced branch. These diseases are also addressed as Rheumatological diseases or Rheumatisms. Most common disorders that a Rheumatologist's help is asked for is Arthritis or joint problems. Arthritis is not a single disease but a group of diseases affecting the joint. The damage can be from two causes viz. Inflammatory or Non-inflammatory. The Inflammatory can cause pain, swelling and stiffness. Some examples are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis. They can involve one joint or many joints. The joints can also get deformed.  Some diseases of this group can affect the spine. The effect of these diseases can involve other organs like skin, eyes, lungs, etc. Hence, the treatment is directed not against pain but has a holistic approach towards the disease pathology, symptoms and overall health (physical and mind). These diseases require special medicines which require close monitoring. There are some ailments which belong to groups of connective tissue disorders or vasculitis. Here the brunt of damage is not in the joint but on vital organs. These can be life threatening. The non-inflammatory joint diseases can be as debilitating. Osteoarthritis is one such disease. The treatment involves an individualized approach of redesigning life styles and handling medicines. Sometimes, surgical treatment is warranted for which an Orthopaedician's help is sought. The Rheumatologist works along with Orthopaedicians with role play being of one handling the medical management and the other being of surgical care respectively. There are some myths regarding this branch of medicine like - side effects of medicines, incurable disease outcomes, psychiatric associations and many more. These observations are far from truth. Side-effects occur more commonly when doctors not trained in this speciality use it without correct monitoring. The right medicine in the right dose from the right Doctor under right monitoring is a magical potion. Try to ensure the MAGIC! Incurability is not a bane of all diseases but a few.  Loss of functionality is more bigger menace which requires a HOLISTIC APPROACH!. Many patients of Arthritis or Rheumatism are targeted as being malingering or psychiatric. First of all Psychiatry is now a very advanced branch where success in such diseases under a Psychiatrist is possible. Secondly, the above assumption in most cases is incorrect. Mind is intricately related with body as evidenced in heart, renal, hormonal diseases and virtually any disease known to mankind. The same relationship is noted in Rheumatic ailments. But to address this group as entirely self-concocted is FALSE!

One important part of these diseases the delay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment. A reason for this problem is lack of awareness in society about these problems and the specialists handling them. It's ironical that  awareness even among medical community is also low. Understanding these diseases and educating ourselves is key part of the treatment.

Rheumatology has seen science evolve in leaps and bounds in the last two decades. The disease outcomes under a Rheumatologist have improved significantly. The medicine list and their understanding has exponentially evolved increasing efficacy and safety. Let's join hands and empower ourselves to fight these diseases to ensure a functional and fulfilling life.
